Project brief

The Shard at London Bridge Quarter is London’s newest skyscraper building standing 309.6 meters high. The tower has 72 habitable floors, with a viewing gallery and open-air observation deck – the UK’s highest – on the 72nd floor, at a height of 245 metres. The Shard was designed with an irregular pyramidal shape from the base to the top, and is clad entirely in glass.

The Shard is the tallest completed building in Europe and has redefined London’s skyline and become a symbol for the Capital, recognizable throughout the world.

Our design

A1 Flue Systems were provided with drawings for an empty chimney shaft and asked to use our technical expertise to design, manufacture and install an appropriate flue structure.

Initially we designed and installed the steel platform at each level to carry the flue structure through each section of the shaft. The final installation comprised seven flue structures which served three boilers, two generators and two combined heating and power (CHP) systems.

We had to ensure the longevity of structure and that it could be accessed easily for maintenance. We are now contracted to provide ongoing maintenance services.

Testimonial

“On such a high profile project that would become a symbol for London, we had to be assured that all sub contracting partners could contribute to the smooth running of the project to ensure it was finished on time and within budget. We were very impressed with the technical expertise A1 Flue Systems were able to provide and how well they managed works during their part of the construction phase. There was a lot of bespoke design and manufacturing required and the quality of their final installation was extremely high.”
