The project
Refurbishment of the landmark Cerium Building began in spring 2019, aided by a £12 million loan from the Scottish Partnership for Regeneration in Urban Centres. With six floors and 85,000 square feet of Grade A office space in Glasgow’s financial services district, the main contract included a 10,000 square feet extension. The entire internal space was prepared ready for total upgrading, with all mechanical and electrical installations replaced. The exterior frontage was transformed by a stylish mass of glass. WMQ Building Services won the £3.2 million mechanical and electrical fit-out and was A1 Flue Systems’ client on this prestigious redevelopment.
Our design
A1 Flue Systems submitted proposals for the manufacture and installation of flues whatever boiler products the client chose to use. We were ready for all eventualities. The task was to connect to three 100mm-diameter condensing boilers and a 130mm-diameter water heater. All were designed to rise into a main 550mm-diameter fan dilution system. The system was manufactured by us to BS EN 1856-1 and constructed from a 0.4mm thick 316-grade fully seam-welded single skin flue. Components were assembled by means of an internal spigot and socket system, incorporating a waterproof seal.
Comments
“This huge refurbishment project at 55 Douglas Street in the heart of Glasgow’s business sector has attracted commercial interest from around the world, I am told. We were pleased to play our part, albeit in a small way. Small, but an important element of the new fabric. We dovetailed in with WMQ’s schedule precisely. Everything was completed on time and to budget, much to the client’s satisfaction.”
