Carisbrooke College

The project

The Isle of Wight’s Carisbrooke College, dating back to 1907, has been part of an island-wide innovation federation since 2011, with over 2,000 students and around 200 staff. Carisbrooke College is situated within 24 acres of landscaped gardens – a backdrop to the teaching, sports, events and meetings facilities. Having survived unpopular local authority plans for closure in 2015, the college is undergoing extensive renovations and redevelopment. The focal point is a new school building to accommodate 600 pupils aged between 11 and 16. The main contractor for the three-storey building is Sir Robert McAlpine, with costs being met by the Department for Education’s central funding agency.

Our design

The manufacture and installation was commissioned by mechanical engineering subcontractor Integral UK. It involved a 200 mm diameter central flue for two condensing boilers, rising into a main header system that runs horizontally through an offset 90-degree elbow to a 90-degree base tee and drain, then veering vertically to termination. A further pair of condensing water heaters running horizontally through various elbows and an external wall required 130 mm diameter systems, with a maximum temperature rating of 160°C. The project architects specified that all roof terminals and fittings should be coloured blue, as per the building’s cladding.

Testimonial

“As a project manager, you expect to have to solve dilemmas on site, but there were no problems whatsoever with the A1 Flue Systems team and their work. All went to plan, I am pleased to say. It was on time, within budget and without hassle. Just what was required.”
