Project brief
BAM Construction, part of the European construction enterprise owned by Netherlands based Royal BAM Group began construction of the £100m new Co-operative Group’s head office – 1 Angel Square – in Manchester in June 2010.
A1 Flue Systems were appointed by integrated mechanical and electrical building services provider Rotary North West to specify the chimney and flue system for this 15 storey building which comprises of 325,000 sq ft of open plan office and support space.
Our design
Construction was completed in 2012 and we were involved in the latter stages of the construction phase to manufacture, supply and install two boiler flues and two combined heating and power flues.
This is a project that we are particularly proud of because the architect had decided to use the chimney flue as a key feature to distinguish the building from far afield in a distinctive “db” shape. The building has won many environmental awards for The Co-operative Group which is widely recognised for its ethics and its leadership position in sustainability.
We also assisted during the “topping out” phase to erect the external chimneys on a temporary basis so that that they were visible in the PR photography. We then returned at the appropriate time to complete the final installation.
Testimonial
“When we realised that the architect wanted to make a design feature of the chimney to accentuate the height of the building we contacted A1 Flues as we knew they have the design expertise and the skills to bespoke manufacture everything in the UK. We have been delighted with the way they have managed this project and their willingness to provide on-going advice, particularly the assistance given in order to maintain environmental and sustainability standards.”
