Project brief
Built in 1985 as a young offender institution, HMP Stocken opened as a category C closed training prison. It has since expanded with new wings and an inspection identified that the existing primary centralised boilers and satellite secondary plant rooms situated around the site were in poor condition and required replacement.
Interserve, the international support services and construction group, were appointed as the overall project contractor and they chose A1 Flues to assist with the manufacture and installation of the required flue and ventilation systems.
Our design
Working within a prison environment meant we had to work to very strict security protocols and building regulation standards. We had to ensure the minimum amount of disruption to the establishment regimes and daily management routines. The prison remained operational at all times throughout the project therefore there could be no disruptions to the daily movement of prisoners on or off site.
The new heating system involved the provision of new dual fuel boilers located in the main boiler house, a gas fired Combined Heating and Power (CHP) Unit, and various modifications to ducting and pipe work in the central boiler house.
A key highlight of the project was the installation of a 2600mm windshield to the external chimney tower.
Testimonial
“It was clear from the tender document that winning this project would require expertise in working within a high security area, a track record of deilvering projects on time without disruption, and high standard of workmanship. We therefore had to be confident that any subcontractors we used on the project could live up to the demands of both Interserve and the client. We chose A1 Flue Systems because they demonstrated that they could meet all the above criteria and I am pleased to say that they have indeed lived up to this expectation in every way.”
