The project

Purpose-built East Lothian Community Hospital in Haddington on the outskirts of Edinburgh was designed to pull together onto a single site the services of two previous hospitals, bringing about a 60% increase in patient beds. The scheme allowed for a further 20 orthopaedic rehabilitation beds for people recovering from strokes. An overall objective was to allow treatments to be carried out nearer to home, but another important feature was the new capability of joining up health and social care services as seamlessly as possible. This four-year project, started in 2016, has an approved budget of £70 million – the largest of its kind in Scotland.

Our design 

A1 Flue Systems’ work in Haddington related to three dual-fuel boilers and a biomass boiler. For the dual-fuel units, there were individual connections, each rising through 90-degree elbows then running horizontally through offsets and reaching beyond an external wall before rising to termination with mast support. As with the dual-fuel system, the biomass boiler connection, after going through an external wall, required access tees to a 90-degree booted base tee and drain, rising vertically, straight to the termination. There were extreme flue lengths and bends. Our structural design calculations were to BS-EN 1993-1-1 2005 Steel Structures, and all other relevant British Standards were followed. The entire A1 Flue Systems product range is manufactured and fitted in accordance with the ISO 9001:2008 Quality System.
