Hendon Waterside

Hendon Waterside

The project

Hendon Waterside is a flagship housing regeneration development by Barratt London. Overlooking the Welsh Harp Reservoir and only half an hour from the capital’s centre, this is becoming a modern, thriving neighbourhood. More than 2,000 dwellings are scheduled: a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroomed units, plus a host of community facilities. The 170-hectare site includes a networked underground energy centre. This involves a combined heat and power (CHP) engine, two large-scale thermal stores, expansion tanks and a pair of 3,400kW boilers. Barratt London stated that: “The focus on build quality is paramount, to demonstrate the value of low*-carbon systems for many years to come.”

Our design

Compared to many of the installations that A1 is involved with, this was relatively straightforward – largely because the flue systems were installed in the purpose-built risers within the core of the building. There were four boilers, and the 550mm and 450mm flue systems fed off them and channelled the exhaust gases up through the 27 floor risers.

“A1 Flue Systems know their discipline very well. Their technical expertise at Hendon Waterside was exactly what we expected from a key supply chain partner as we progressed with this demanding project,” according to Rob Callaghan, regional director at Vital Energi, A1 Flue Systems’ M&E (mechanical and electrical) client. “Everything needed was designed and purpose-built by them, all of it in this country, I’m told, and they installed to a high standard,” he added.
